G-Man Guns? What's Issued and Approved?
I'm looking for a comprehensive list of handgun makes/models and calibers that are used by federal law enforcement agencies (FBI, DEA, ATF, Marshal Service, INS, Border Patrol, Customs...). I'm trying to find which handguns are ISSUED and which other handguns are AUTHORIZED to be carried.
If you have any input as to what handguns are either issued or authorized by the Feds, I would appreciate it! |

The FBI will allow an agent to carry the gun they were originally trained on. Since the FBI changes guns/calibers faster than most people change underwear, there are quite a few guns that can be seen on FBI agents.
Right now, the FBI is issuing Glocks in 40S&W to their new recruits. |

I'm looking for what they carry in the PRESENT. I'm only looking at the "average" officer, not the FBI HRT or Marshal SOG teams.

In Arizona, I know that the Capitol Police (a state agency) carry Glock 22s or 23s. For some reason, I thought the DPS officers did as well. Capitol police must carry issue guns.
Agents of the US Naval Criminal Investigative Service carry Sig 9mms. From what I know, these are required carry as well for logistic reasons. Arizona Game and Fish carry Sigs, .40 I believe. The AZ Dept of Corrections officers (another state agency) I have seen were carrying Glocks. |

PA State Police carry the Beretta 96D, .40S&W, not the 92D in 9mm as the list indicates.

Also, the NJSP are switching over to the Sig P228. Not sure what the time-frame is for that.

INS used to carry Ruger GP100s. Not too long ago, they switched to Beretta 96s. They're in the process of switching their undercover officers to HK USPc .40s. These HKs are fitted with the HK LEM trigger (DAO, around 7-8 lbs).
They're also allowing their uniformed personnel to purchase and carry the HKs. M1911 |

DEA bought 4,000 H&K compacts, I think in .45 (or was it .40??).

Current standard FBI issue handguns are, I believe, Glocks in .40 S&W, specifically the G23 or G22 (?), as the individual agent wishes. However, considerable autonomy in the use of other handguns is normally approved, with many other calibers and manufactures in day-to-day use.

Last I heard the USSS issues a SIG 228 (or 229) in 357SIG. FBI issuing Glock 23 in 40, Border Patrol Beretta 96 DAO in 40, IRS used to issue SIG 226 in 9MM, but haven't heard from them in a while (thank goodness). Don't know about the rest. If you ask the firearms companies they may give you a list, they do like to brag for PR reasons.

Texas issues the P226 .357 to uniformed troopers, P229 .357 to investigators. North Carolina is transitioning to the Beretta Cougar .357 SIG. IIRC, Kentucky was going to the Glock 22 .40.

What do they carry in Brisbane? Sharp sticks? Or is that just the general population?

"***makes/models and calibers used by federal law enforcement agencies***"
That's going to be a long list because 95% of these agencies will allow agents or officers to deviate from the "standard issue" weapon for any of several reasons - ranging from senority to special-purpose assignment. For example, the FBI, while "offically" transitioning to 40S&W Glock 22s/23s for newbie Quantico grads, still allows senior agents in the field to retain weapons previously qualified-with, e.g., the 10mm S&W 1076, among others. Also, the HRT-assigned weapon is the 1911 Springfield .45 acp. Within the alphabet soup of the various federal LE agencies, officers/agents can carry an "approved" personally-owned weapon (or previously-issued piece) as long as they qualify with it, same as the officially issued pistol. (By the way, this is also the rule at many local PDs). What make, model & caliber combinations get approved differs from agency to agency and depends on the specifics of an agency's written firearms policy. This is done almost exclusively to minimize liability, although if you reviewed them collectively you'd see a lot of overlap in the approved pistol/caliber combos. Typically this means a pistol from a nationally recognized manufactuer, on the order of a S&W/Glock/Sig/Beretta/H&K/1911-pattern/Ruger/etc. Typically "approved" LE calibers, in autoloaders anyway, are going to run the 9mm/357Sig/40S&W/10mm/45acp gamut. Check out the following site for the federal, state and local agencies that issue, or that upon qualification allow individual officers/agents to carry, the 10mm Auto (you'll see more than one federal agency listed): http://home.earthlink.net/~gnappi/10user.htm Hope this helps. |

Was just shooting with an FBI buddy of mine this past Saturday. When he graduated the academy he was issued a SIG. That was 2-3 years ago, maybe 4 years ago. He traded the SIG in for a full size Glock 40 S&W as his duty weapon and carries the baby Glock 40 S&W as back-up.

Queensland (Brisbane) Police issue the Glock 22 to patrol, Glock 23 to detectives. New South Wales (Sydney) and the Northern Territory (Darwin) use the G22 as well. Victoria (Melbourne) use the 3" S&W M10, while Western Australia (Perth) uses the S&W Sigma .40.
As a side note, the shooters of Australia were disarmed through the use of buyback programs, rather than door-to-door confiscation. The majority of gunowners went along meekly, feeling that the buyback would net them more money than a private sale would. The IPSC and CAS shooters have buried their heads in the sand, thinking that because they particpate in "sport shooting" their guns won't be taken away. As a whole, they're sheep who never even considered resisting the new laws. |
