All the defense handgun cartridges from the .38 Special/9mm on up to the .45ACP have an excellent real world records. So choice is a matter of preference.

A few hundreths of an inch in diameter is not going to make that much difference to the target nor are they going to be impressed by which cartridge they've been struck by.

Could go with anecdotal evidence till enternity for and against all the major defense cartridges.Not worth it.

Could go into the caliber wars, but why? They all do a respectable job and are underpowered when compared to longarm cartridges,slugs, or buckshot.
Those are not certain stoppers either. That's all recorded in history time and again. It's in the links as to why to a certain degree.

Nothing wrong with a 9mm. or other caliber in that range.

Lay that one to rest and let the guy get on with things.
