There's a lot of good choices here. This being does the gun fit you and your needs is the deciding factor and most of those guns named so far are in that ballpark.

If CCW carry is the order of the day then there are a few ones to consider.

Kahr makes the CW with 3.5 inch barrels in 9mm. and .40 S&W. These are lower priced than their other makes and models. Single stacks by the way.

S&W has the 908 which is a budget version of the 3913 and in 9mm., has the 3.5 inch barrel, is a single stack mag also.

There's the Stoeger Cougar that used to be made by Beretta and know by gun makers in Turkey. This on Beretta machinery and specs. These have had excellent reviews in a number of periodicals. This includes several who do not receive or accept advertising.

If shorter double stacks and on a budget there are a number of other choices.

Taurus has the 911/940 series. These are cousins of the PT92, but are a smaller package that can be used for duty or CCW carry.

Reasoning on these picks goes as follows. CCW carry was mentioned and a number of these are single stack mag designs. Slimmer and shorter than full size guns yet ballistics from the 3.5 or 4inch barrels are better over subcompact designs. May not be an overriding factor but needs to be addressed.

Compact pistols cut the split the difference between full size guns and the subcompact ones.Easier to shoot than the sub compacts and yet have none of the total bulk of the full sized pistols.Easier to hide and carry for CCW.

Subcompacts and snub revolvers are specialist guns. Harder to shoot well because of their size and limitations. Can be done. There are shooting techniques that can take care of that, but more dedication is needed to stay proficient.
This all during undue duress in a defense shooting scenario.

Chuck Taylor,Mas Ayoob, and other gun writers find that reloading in a fight was not a factor in most gun fights. Make that a large majority of them.

Thus having 7 or eight rounds backed up by a spare magazine or two is not going to be a major handicap over the double stack pistols.

Then there are short double stack pistols mentioned in this thread that address the carry a lot of ammo guise.

www.jgsales.com has S&W SIGMA and 3913 used guns for sale as this is written, www.cdnnsports.com has other pistols and revolvers for sale as used.

So there's things in a nutshell.
