I tried a fanny pack last christmas when I took the family for a few days vacation on the beach. It worked alright and was comfortable enough at 10-11.00 o'clock, but I felt kinda silly, because it was my sons (6yo) bright light blue spiderman fanny pack. After a few raised eyebrows from those around me I felt sufficiently humiliated and went back to IWB in shorts with a belt, like I usually do.
A proper, neutral looking fanny pack with that built-in holster as pictured above would be a different matter, though. A friend of mine has one, and I have hardly ever seen him without it.
If I'm out hiking with friends, I carry OWB for comfort.
Regarding the pictures, I would recommend a little strip of leather or chain or something attached to the zipper in order for easier and quicker access. Something a bit bigger to grab onto and just yank it open with.
