Where’s the ammo?

For years I’ve been reading about all this milsurp 7.62X54R that could be had for cheap and now that I have two Mosin rifles, can’t seem to find much of any of it. I did buy a few boxes of 20 new ammo from Midway, but couldn't find much milsurp.

So, where do you find it? And what is good ammo for these things? Russian? Albanian? Yugi?

Thanks,

All the cheap ammo is going to Iraq, from what I've heard. Our govt. is buying it to arm the Iraqi's with.

When i got my mosin, you could buy good milsurp ammo for about $70 for a case of 440 rounds. The stuff was clean (although corosive) and shot well. Now all I can find is antique russian stuff made at the height of WW2, and I'm not sure I want to shoot it.

It's everywhere here, in tins and cans. Old stuff, Soviet, corrosive, probably from the 50's through 70's or so.

Locally, I meant, NH. I tend to buy milsurp from local sellers so I can inspect the rounds.

Online, yeah, Midway is a good bet.

Go to gun shows and bring a good luck charm.

Nothing in the three local shops here in CA. I ordered a spam can from aimsurplus on fourrobert13's suggestion. I'll check it out and order more if it's OK.

How 'bout those Rooskie can openers I've seen? Anyone tried one?

I have no idea where my favorite shop gets it, but they get Wonderful Things. Wooden crates with Cyrillic lettering on them full of boxes of ammo from the height of the Cold War, and sometimes black lunchboxes of Swiss GP-11 that I grab.

If you ever find a shop like that, give them as much business as you can. Usually, it's the sort where the people running it do so for love of the hobby, often a "collectors" shop instead of a high-volume-in-EBRs sales location.

I picked up some recently from J&G Rifle Ranch for a good price. Looks like they dont have that price anymore. Have you tried a Google search?

Just how much of this ammo do you think there is???you better get used to making your own.some of that ww2 stuff was made with powder that was not washed enuf to get the acid out and corrodes from inside out.russian I 'm talking about.
Its time to wake up and get setup to reload.and with cast bullets.

Yup...put some dies in the shopping cart this morning.

Meanwhile, I have 1240 rounds (mostly milsurp, but some new also) on the way.

They are not shipping old surplus to Iraq. If they're buying ammo for Iraq security force AKs, I'd expect it's all new, QC-assured lots from Barnaul, Wolf, whomever got the bid.
