While we're waiting for the experts, here's all I've found so far...
From the '99 Standard Catalog of Firearms: Mauser Werke The Model 98 was 7.92mm with a 29" bbl. Model 98a Carbine, marked KAR. 98, had a 23.6" bbl. Model 98k Carbine, marked Mod. 98, had a 23.6" bbl. and a laminated stock. THEN, under the 98k entry, is a little box with a picture of a scoped rifle and the caption: "A Mauser Model 98k sniper rifle was sold at auction for $14,375. Chambered for 8mm cartridge and fitted with a Dialytan 4 power scope number to the rifle. Nazi proofs. All numbers match. Condition was near mint. Rock Island Auction Company, September, 1997" So, I'd say it's worth between $90 and $14,375. I'll keep looking. John |

Before any of the markings on the rifle can be analyzed the date needs to be known.
