Shadow Wolves

Lurking in the desert along the U.S.-Mexico border is a little known, unsung group of Navajos. Dressed in camouflage and carrying M-16s and Glocks, they steality hunt the desert for their prey.

OK, enough hype. Don't get it from me guys. Go to your library and pick up this month's (Jan 2003) copy of Smithsonian Magazine. They've got an article of a twenty-one man all-Navajo unit of the Border Patrol Service. They're using their tracking skills for drug interdiction and have been hauling in about 60,000 lbs of marijuana a year. That's only 10% of the drugs coming through their reservation.

Good article and great pics. You'd think it was SoF.

Schuey, you bet! I don't know what they'll insert, but with my monitor it sure won't do the pics justice. Interesting that they put quite a bit of stuff in on the George Caitlin article, but the other articles look like simple summaries with no attachments.

To the library!

Thanks for the link Chugach. That's last month issue right now (Dec. 24) and there's no pics in the Manhattan article. Too bad because there was a picture of Five Corners and in the printed edition the caption quoted Davy Crockett who visited the area. It said something to the extent that he would rather "risque" fighting Indians than go to that neighborhood at night. When a man who "kills a bar at three" won't go to a particular neighborhood in Manhattan, doesn't that tell you something?

BTW, I'd love to spend 1 year learning from those guys. My own time, my own money. What an adventure that would be.

Makes sense -- Crook used Dine' scouts in the Apache wars -- but I'm surprised they don't have an Apache troop. If anyone would know the border, it'd be the Apache, Pima and Yaqui.
