Scope for 600 yard range with my CETME
I am joining a gun club that has a 600 yard outdoor range, with firing lines at 200, 300, and 600 yards. I have a .308 Century Arms CETME rifle. With .308 being as expensive as it is now a days, I figure it might be fun to make this gun into a semi auto sniper of sorts. I want to add an HK wide handguard with bipod and some other parts. I also want to add a scope. I KNOW a scope isn't "needed" for such a shot, BUT I think it would be a lot of fun. I am sure I will enjoy getting it dialed in and whatnot. I don't know all that much about scopes. My buddy who is a Ranger was telling me to get a Leupold. Unfortunately, I am not funded by the govt. like he is. What should I look for to be able to make some nice groupings at 600 yards, have fun with, and also stay affordable? I know it sounds kind of lame, but growing up with movies like "Sniper" and stuff would make doing something like this a lot of fun. Thanks for the help and try not to flame me too much. Remember, I am 25 and still like some of the novelty that shooting has to offer.

I really like my Burris Fullfield II. I got the Ballistics Plex, but don't currently have a range farther than 100 yrds, so I haven't gotten to play around with the extra crosshairs. The Bushnell 3200 also gets really good reviews on here when price is a consideration. I don't have any experience with it however.
Do you have a specific price you are looking for? Specific magnification? |

No more than $250.00
What magnification would be necessary to get a good view of a silhouette target at 600 yards? I guess I want to get as up close as I can. |

I would take a good look at the Bushnell 3200 like he said. I would probably stick with 10X. If you plan on hunting with it also, I would get a variable power scope that can go down to around 4X. 600 yards really shouldn't need super powerful magnification. this isn't a benchrest gun we are talking about where the extra mag will make a difference. 9-10X is fine.

the Nikon Buckmaster Series Riflescope 4.5-14X40 MT BDC seems like it would be a good one. It retails for 299. What do you guys think?

For 600 yds shooting on regualtion targets, you don't really need a scope, irons are used all the time. If you want to use a scope "just because", but a good scope. A cheap scope may seem like a good idea, but at 600 yds any fedect in the optics will be more than apparent. A Bushnell 4200 Elite 3-12X will work, they run about $350.

I love how you said $250 and then your very next post you are asking about a $299 scope
I don't have any experience with the Nikon you mentioned, but my Burris is a 14x and I love the extra magnification (over a 9, 10x model). Yes, people do shoot at 600 yards with iron sights as Scorch mentioned, but it's not for me. I like my magnification. I have all the respect in the world for people who can do it though! |

after a little research it seems as though the Bushnell 3200 5-15X Variable, 40mm would work well.
