Glock 17 for the reliability and 17-rd mags, as long as it's not on the "frame upgrade" list.
Hah! I have one of those "stigmatized" Glocks, and guess what...

2000+ rounds and counting!

I also own a 1997 Cavalier with 32,000 miles on it and as yet no spontaneous airbag deployments.

I'll continue to scoff at all recalls...

CZ-75B with high caps 15-round mags.

Would like to try some of those 30-round mags for the CZ-75B that I saw in Cabelas (or was it BassProShop) catalog last month?

Anyone have some?

"one 9mm..."

How about a .358 Winchester!

Or a .357 magnum...

maybe a 35 Whelen for bigger stuff.

All are very close to .355, aka 9mm.

You didn't say Handgun!

Easy, the BHP which has the most time under it's belt in real time , "been there done that" War.

Being reliable, accurate and pretty don't hurt either!

Next, #2 would be the CZ and #3 the Sig.

BTW, they make good 17 round BHP mags if the Cap is an issue to the Glockies and with less BULK.

The BHP is arguably the most issued/copied/produced 9mm ever.

That's why I picked it. Oh and that's what I shoot the most.

Have to go with a Glock 34. CZ second choice. Available mags.

How come the people who really train for SHTF, like those special forces that actually have a good chance of having to shoot in anger, all picked H&K USP or SIG 226 over the Glock?

I had to go with the XD. Out of all of them that I've had a chance to shoot, it fit's better. Glocks are just to fat for me to get a good grip.

I'd bring my own H&K P7M8.

I'll keep my extra pair for backups.

From your list.. the Glock 17..this baby was born big and fully immunized..no nursing, pampers or nipple bottle needed.
Don't forget the underwater kit modification for it..I mean you did say 'If all hell broke loose'

Overall, the Beretta 92FS. Sigs and HKs are overpriced and overrated. The CZs are nice but Beretta gets the edge in reliability..The BHP marches on but I think the Beretta has surpassed it.. The XD needs some time to prove itself!!

I voted for the 226. I have a BHP on the way so I can't comment on it. For me it comes down to reliability and hitting potential (accuracy). I've never had any kind of malf with the 226, and I'm the most accurate out of any 9mm with it.

This is all nice for fun, but

rauchman has a good point about not being able to comment on the pistols he hasn't fired.

How many folks who've posted and voted have tested all of the listed pistols? Are some people just voting on a combination of experience and hearsay? Or just hearsay? Heck, I've never even fired that model of H&K or that Slovak Springfield thing (though I've put at least a box through all of the other models, and a lot more than that through some). Shoot, how many "special forces" types actually test anything before deciding what to carry; I thought that the military pretty much just gives you what they want to issue. Maybe that "Army of One" nonsense has changed everything . . .

It occurs to me that the fundamental problem of polls like this is that one don't have to know what he's talking about to have a say. Makes the results (which I haven't even looked at, btw) pretty much worthless for determining what's actually best.

Sort of like many elections I've seen . . .

(Apologies for my grumpiness this morning, by the way. I don't know what's wrong with me.)

Erich and others:

The most interesting thing I've taken away from this poll is that the Browning and CZ have done amazingly well in the face of competition from allegedly more 'evolved' designs.

I'm simply awestruck to see how well those particular hg's have done. And I own and love a CZ, though I voted for the Glock for the reasons I stated earlier.

The biggest problem with this poll is that I forgot to include the Beretta 92 (and its variants) and Walther P99, which would have no doubt altered the percentages in an unpredictable manner (for example, how many votes would the Beretta have stolen from the Browning or the CZ, amongst others).

The one thing that can't be argued is that the BHP and CZ seem to be timeless.

Regards.

9mm for "hell broke loose"

I take the BHP as it has definetly passed the test of time,
and as back-up a S&WM39-2
