I found your question interesting and did what research I could on the internet. Mossberg has ~3 Marinecote models, but not much of a description regarding what that all entails. Remington has a couple of Marine Magnums and indicates the barrel and receiver have been nickel-plated inside & out. I'm unaware of any tests specifically dealing with the marine models of shotguns. When it comes to guns for a wife, I say let the wife choose and also consider attending some type of formal training. The rest is dealing with the Mossberg vs. Remington choice and the 20" vs. 18.5" barrel issues. Everybody has their own preferences regarding those. If both shotguns are going to be available to both of you, I suggest having both the same brand, thus having similar/identical controls. I have both Mossberg and Remington and can switch easily between the two, but I also handle shotguns (& other weapons) daily. Most/many people do not (with the shotgun being like a fire extinguisher stored somewhere for emergencies only), but since you're on this forum, you probably are into guns more than others.

I have the 870 Marine Magnum and so far - 5 years old, it has not failed me once. It rides around in my hunting 4X4 and my farm truck all the time and the finish is still as good as new. I do not usually put it in a case it usually rides on the seat. I would highly recommend this gun and it's finish. It is very durable and reliable.
I do not own or know about the Mossberg. Indy.
