Blemishes
Thanks for advice on how to buff out blemishes on a stainless steel revolver. My brand new Ruger SP 101 has some stains and scratches on the cylinder.

Stainless steel wool and Flitz polish will work. Don't use regular steel wool.

I also like Flitz, it's a polishing paste that I have had great success with. I use a product called Lead Away Cloth, which is a cloth type polisher. I cut that in little squares and use it to polish areas, especially around the cylinder chamber holes. When I use steel wool, I am very careful and use 0000 size.

Thanks
Thanks for the great replies.
Someone just suggest something called "Never Dull". Does anyone else have a comment about this stuff? I thought I'd check before I do more damage than good to my brand new toy. |

Here is the problem-you need an abrasive that matches the finsh. Rugers are satin finished. All the products mentioned would be good for a bright finished gun, but are too fine for satin finish. Get a piece of smooth scrap steel and the following:
Red Scotchbrite pad Green Scotchbrite Grey Scotchbrite Polish the scrap steel, and see which one matches your finish. You can also try wet/dry automotive sandpaper, but it is less forgiving than the Scotchbrite pads. Try 400 and 600 grits. BTW- regular steel wool will not hurt your gun. It will not "imbed itself" in the stainless steel. |

Bill's method works great, I have cleaned up several SS Rugers to look like new with Fritz and red scotchbrite.

madcratebuilder, did any of the "several SS Rugers" that you "have cleaned up" include the SP 101 revolver? Thanks.
