Heck of an impressive collection ya got there. And camera / photo skillz. Dang you could probably fit 4 of those complete .222 rounds into the case of the .700 nitro and still load the bullet in it. That .577 T-Rex & .585 Nyati just look *mean*.

Mike,
There is a Mr. Scott in the IAA from Pennsylvania, he is the treasurer I believe. He must have one or the largest cartridge collection in the world. He has built additional rooms on his house to house it all. You name it he has it. Nice guy really knows his stuff.

The worst recoiling rifle I've ever fired was the .505 Gibbs, closely followed by the .460 Wby.
I'm more than willing to touch off most rounds, but I think I'd draw the line at the T-Rex and the Nyati.

Thanks for sharing the pics, very interesting indeed.
The thought of shooting a .505 or a .460 makes me value the protection afforded by ' depends ' brand undergarments...LOL

Exactly what benefit does one get from going past .505? Was it being pushed by dentists and chiropractors trying to drum up more business for themselves?

No, I'd say a lot of it is psychological when you're facing an animal that weighs 1,000 times more than you do and which can turn you into a very greasy pancake in about 3 seconds. Ross Seyfried, who developed the .585 Nyati, said in his original article on it in Guns & Ammo that he came up with the concept after staring down a VERY pissed off bull elephant. Even though he had (IIRC) a .450 Nitro Express double rifle in his hands, which pushed a 450ish grain FMJ bullet and developed close to 5,000 ft. lbs. of energy, he wanted something bigger, more powerful, and a bolt rifle.

I even specifically recall that article, though not too many details. I just wonder if anything past 5,000 ft/lbs drops them any faster which is the entire issue. Technically a .30-06 could put them on the ground but not fast enough when your life's on the line. I know that I only trust my ability to hunt non-lethal species with something that I've shot several times and know I'm good with it. I haven't yet gone after anything dangerous---intentionally---and for me the standards would be even higher. It thus escapes me as to how someone practices much with something that can realistically damage your shoulder. Not just uncomfortable but downright destructive. I recall in that article he had something that ripped the action out the back end of the stock. YIKES. Maybe that's just my own limitations.

What, no .50 BMG?
I realize it might not fit with the spirit of your collection of .50 and over, but you should at least include one round, for "scale".

I recently unearthed all of my old copies of Guns & Ammo.
I'm going to have to see if I can find the Seyfried article. I seem to recall it coming out in the early 1990s when I was living in DC and working for American Rifleman.

here is a group of cartridge comparison pics I have been sent over the years.
http://bcraig.net/hosting/rifle/bullets/ edit: forgot to mention, on some of those you have to look at the filename to know what cartridges you're looking at. They are usually labeled from left to right. Here is one in particular because it is relevant. (linked due to large dimensions) http://bcraig.net/hosting/rifle/bull...20calibers.jpg For the person who asked about handguns, check this out. http://bcraig.net/hosting/rifle/bull...unds%20big.jpg |
