Which One of These?
ok, so I've narrowed it down to these for my first handgun, which do yall think are the best (it will be used for home defense).
Steyr M-A1 9mm or .40 (both same price) Ruger P95, or SR9 Taurus 24/7 pro, or P92 |

The Taurus 92 is a very affordable solid choice,I owned the SS version and felt it was far better than 2 "real" beretta 92's that I owned. I've owned several Ruger auto's and found them accurate and reliable and built to last forever. You can't go wrong with those 2 if you plan to just use it for HD and not CC.

O.K.- I know it's not on your list, and I apologize in advance... but I would also consider the CZ-75. It's in your price range, and a heck of a dependable and accurate gun.

x2 on the CZ
but out of that list I would get the ruger. It's not the best looking gun but it is reliable and durable .... the Ruger P series really are some well made pistols |

none
None you listed for home defense.
Shotgun. Short barrel if you can 18-20 inches. Sorry, may get some slack, but the 9mm has penetration issues in a home. I'm more comfortable with the .45. |

Have the Ruger P95(2 to be exact) and the Taurus PT111, which is related to the 24/7 series as far as similarity goes. Also have some CZ75 experience.
Have others in these links who are PT92 qualified. All these are excellent pistols. In the my signature are the links to the Ruger and Taurus forums. Good info at all of them. http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/...d.php?t=269366 http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/in...p?topic=3491.0 http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/in...p?topic=3492.0 http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/in...p?topic=3484.0 http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/index.php?topic=48.0 http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/in...p?topic=3001.0 http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/in...p?topic=1916.0 http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/in...p?topic=1478.0 http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/in...p?topic=2948.0 http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/in...p?topic=2949.0 http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/index.php?topic=349.0 http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/in...p?topic=3250.0 http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/in...p?topic=3054.0 http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/in...p?topic=1992.0 For Ruger http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/index.php?topic=147.0 http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/in...p?topic=1688.0 There's a lot of other Ruger links there, but this seems to be more than enough. For CZ there's: http://czechpistols82792.yuku.com/ Since this is what fits you and your needs, research these all out at the specific gun forums.Ask questions, do searches if possible, read old and new threads. You'll get the info you need. Handle and try as many of the brands and types as well. This should keep you in clover for a while. This is a gun for you and your niche. Lots of looking before plunking down hard earned dollars just makes sense. |

Not on your list but I'd buy one of these from Mark. It's hard to beat a Glock for a self defense pistol and pretty much impossible to wear one out. This is a good deal: http://www.summitgunbroker.com/1966886.html

Ruger
I'm a huge Ruger fan in general and would say "Yes!" to a P-series pistol any day, though my preference would be for .40 S&W (P94 models) over the 9mm Euro Pellet. Ultimately, I would suggest a revolver, the Ruger GP100 4" stainless model. Sits ready in a concealed place, uncomplicated and good to go at all times.
Again, off topic. I second the poster who suggested a short barrel 12 gauge pump gun for home defense with this caveat; motion sensor lights, a well pruned yard, good locks and the shotgun as your ultimate back-up as you dial 911. |

"Euro pellet"! That's funny right there. (being that I'm a .45 shooter/carrier).

Euro Pellet
I make no claim of invention on the Euro pellet name for the 9mm, I likely saw it here in the post of another. To me and most late eighties to early nineties Marines, the 'theft' of our beloved 1911 pistols and the issue of the Beretta bean slinger was a really bad time. To us, the 9mm cartridge is for the MP5 series SMGs and little else.

I understand that the 9mm is slightly smaller than a .45, but in reality it does the same thing (with a good stopping bullet) of putting a threat down. And it is a lot cheaper to shoot.

So choice is a matter of preference. A few hundreths of an inch in diameter is not going to make that much difference to the target nor are they going to be impressed by which cartridge they've been struck by. Could go with anecdotal evidence till enternity for and against all the major defense cartridges. Not worth it. Could go into the caliber wars, but why? They all do a respectable job and are underpowered when compared to longarm cartridges, slugs, or buckshot. Those are not certain stoppers either. That's all recorded in history time and again. It's in the links as to why to a certain degree. Nothing wrong with a 9mm. or other caliber in that range. Lay that one to rest and let the guy get on with things. |
