Looking for inexpensive full size 9mm, need your thoughts
I need an inexpensive (say less than $500) handgun for concealed carry. I'm leaning toward either a Beretta 92 or a Sig P226...although I could be tempted by one of the Sig P6s. SOG and CDNN have police turn in models available in the $350-400 range. Basically, I'm looking for something that will be reliable for the long haul and for which magazines will be commonly available.
Does anyone have experience with any of these police turn in weapons. If so, I need your opinion.

Jack,
I'm curious as to why you are limiting your choice to these three? If price is the deciding factor and all other options are open, would you be open to other choices? |

Springfield XD. For ~$500 you get an accurate, super-reliable pistol that feels great in the hand and they also throw in a kydex holster, 2 16-round stainless steel mags, a kydex double mag holster and a speed loader. When I bought my XD9 Service Springfield Armory had a special offer where I could have gotten a 70 lumen rail-mounted flashlight for $35 with the purchase of the pistol. They said it was a $100 flashlight, FWIW. Not sure, but they might still be running that special or something similar. I spent my $35 extra dollars on more ammo since I would rather have a flashlight for my 12 gauge HD tool, so I can't comment on it's quality.
I LOVE my XD9. Can't imagine ever parting with it. Great for plinking and target shooting and I CCW mine all the time in an SA kydex paddle holster I got new for $10.00. I admit it's not a secure holster for CCW, but I'm waiting until the new year to get something more effective with a thumb break retention strap. I carry Federal 124gr +p HST.

9mm
You say you want a full sized 9mm and then you want it for concealled carry. I don't usually put those two thoughts together.
Okay, your program, but why limit yourself to those three listed? The Taurus PT92 is a clone of the Beretta, the Browning High Power or its clones, Kahr, even Glocks, a whole bunch of S&W's, the list could be almost infinite. Go shopping and try some in your hands. I don't have any of these so I am not promoting anything I own. A lot of other used guns might have been used less than a police turn in, or not. |

Right now I think the police trade in Sig P6's are a great deal. Its a nice package for CCW.

+1 for the CZ75s!
On your list, I would go with a Sig. Although as others have pointed out, fullsize 9mm is not usually thought of as a "carry gun". My primary carry gun is a fullsize 9mm: Ruger SR9. $400 or so, NIB. I do have a CZ75 9mm that I dearly love, I consider it a world-class weapon, but it is considerably heavier and slightly larger than my SR9. |

S&W Sigma's.. $300-$375 w/2 16rd mags etc. They have come a LONG way from "SWOCK" days! Really an excellent value for the dollar and leaves some for ammo and holster(s)..

In my community a new Glock 17 sells for as little as $479. I'd avoid the LE trade-ins. While they've probably been clearned regularly, they could have a lot of wear and tear from a lot of range use. But, I would consider buying a used gun from an individual, if the price was right.

Here's another excellent option. Cdnn has fnp 9mm brand new in the box for $379.00, includes 3 17 round mags. Its made in America and has a 4 inch barrel which might work for your concealed option needs. I think this is one of the best deals I've seen in a long time.

A brand new Smith & Wesson M&P9c will be more concealable and have a lifetime warranty. Right now you should be able to find one brand new for $450-500 w/2 magazines. Plus you'll get $50 back and 2 additional mags by mail. That's effectively $400-450 with 4 x 12rd magazines. Oops I misread - make that 17rd magazines in the full sized M&P9.

There's a lot of good choices here. This being does the gun fit you and your needs is the deciding factor and most of those guns named so far are in that ballpark.
If CCW carry is the order of the day then there are a few ones to consider. Kahr makes the CW with 3.5 inch barrels in 9mm. and .40 S&W. These are lower priced than their other makes and models. Single stacks by the way. S&W has the 908 which is a budget version of the 3913 and in 9mm., has the 3.5 inch barrel, is a single stack mag also. There's the Stoeger Cougar that used to be made by Beretta and know by gun makers in Turkey. This on Beretta machinery and specs. These have had excellent reviews in a number of periodicals. This includes several who do not receive or accept advertising. If shorter double stacks and on a budget there are a number of other choices. Taurus has the 911/940 series. These are cousins of the PT92, but are a smaller package that can be used for duty or CCW carry. Reasoning on these picks goes as follows. CCW carry was mentioned and a number of these are single stack mag designs. Slimmer and shorter than full size guns yet ballistics from the 3.5 or 4inch barrels are better over subcompact designs. May not be an overriding factor but needs to be addressed. Compact pistols cut the split the difference between full size guns and the subcompact ones.Easier to shoot than the sub compacts and yet have none of the total bulk of the full sized pistols.Easier to hide and carry for CCW. http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/index.php?topic2418.0 Subcompacts and snub revolvers are specialist guns. Harder to shoot well because of their size and limitations. Can be done. There are shooting techniques that can take care of that, but more dedication is needed to stay proficient. This all during undue duress in a defense shooting scenario. Chuck Taylor,Mas Ayoob, and other gun writers find that reloading in a fight was not a factor in most gun fights. Make that a large majority of them. Thus having 7 or eight rounds backed up by a spare magazine or two is not going to be a major handicap over the double stack pistols. Then there are short double stack pistols mentioned in this thread that address the carry a lot of ammo guise. www.jgsales.com has S&W SIGMA and 3913 used guns for sale as this is written, www.cdnnsports.com has other pistols and revolvers for sale as used. So there's things in a nutshell. |

A used Sig at a good price is something to be jumped at. I bought a used Sig P220 it still had some of the original packaging grease. I love this gun.
Used Glocks or Sigs are always to be jumped on. Now if you want new and reliable. Try The Taurus PT-92 They've just released a compact version PT-917 |

I'll throw in my two hundredths of a buck.
Bersa makes a Thunder 9 in full size and compact. The compact is still pretty large compared to some of the micro guns available. The full size is 17+1 and the compact is 10+1. The full size is the issued sidearm of the Argentine federal police and many other LEO in that little corner of the world. The frame is alloy and unbelievably light, yet very durable. Quality is very good when you consider the price (should be around $400 NIB). Mine (full size) has had nary a bobble from shot one (it technically doesn't count for your needs since I got mine in .40, but it is the same gun) and is accurate. The fact that it is fully ambidexterous helps if you are a lefty. A down side is magazine cost. About fourty bucks each. Ouchy on the wallet. The magazines are top quaity so the price is worth it. Just another option for ya'. |

The Bersa 9mm Compact - called the UC9 - has 13+1 mag capacity. The 10+1 is for Kali and other restrictive states/locales.
Mine has been extremely reliable thru over 1,100 rounds. The only two problems I have ever had are that the slide doesn't always lock back after the last round in the mag is fired, and the front sight became slightly loose after several hundred rounds were put thru the pistol. Both of these repaired under Bersa's lifetime warranty at no charge, except that I had to pay the shipping cost to their authorized service center. |

I agree with CDH on this one. The fullsize guns seem to be built quite a bt better than the smaller counterparts(IMO)(I have both)
And I also feel the fullsize is built quite a bit better than the Taurus guns at the same price. My only complaint on the Bersa is the sights.(Ball in Bucket) they are good, but I'm not sure about replacements. Shamless plug...I've got one listed in the FS forum,if ya want pix.

A used Sig P6 is a pretty good pistol, the CZ-75 is also an expensive inexpensive pistol, the magazines are pretty cheap too ($22 from Midway for the Mecgar which make the factory mags also).

I had a P6 cop trade-in, and the DA pull was very, very stiff. I'm told that those particular guns had a heavier spring rate for the trigger for LE use, and 225s have a reputation for heavier pulls anyway.
If you think a SIG 226 is too large for concealed carry, you are mistaken. In a good IWB holser it disappears under a hoodie. It's not as slim, but if you think about it a 226 is actually the same size top-to-bottom and back-to-front as a 1911 commander. The 226 is a fantastic all-around gun. It's very accurate for range use, a good weight for carry, and a fine choice USPSA Production or IDPA SSP. The only reason I don't still have mine is that after shooting 1911s a lot my "high thumbs" grip interferes with the slide locking on an empty mag. Edit to add: MecGar 17 round mags are $25 at most and eminently reliable.
