Cod Liver Gun Oil

I have a barrel of cod liver oil that I recently acquired. Now, I know the original Ed's Red contained sperm whale oil so I was wondering how the cod liver oil would be for my handguns?

I think it would work as a fine lubricant for the slides and rails of my semi-autos. I also figure it is a pretty good rust preventive since it comes from a fish and I've never seen a rusty fish. I also would like to use on the outside of my wife's guns so it could be absorbed through her skin in case we decide to have another child. I found out it increases the IQ of babies. The best part, though, is that I have 55 gallons of this stuff and it would last forever.

So, what do you all think?

Oil

Sperm whale oil was highly refined. I do believe cod liver oil might go rancid on you, and your guns would stink to high heaven. The good news is that it is high in Omega 3 anti-oxidants, so drink up.

(sigh) I've said it before and I'll say it again, only because it's never even gotten so much as a chuckle. The only food oil suitable for firearms use is olive oil, and even then it only works on Berettas and Benellis.

It's in my formula for "Crimp's ███ Gun Oil" that I developed from suggestions found on the various gun boards:

1 qt 0w40 Mobil-1 synthetic oil
1 qt Dexron ATF
1 qt Marvel Mystery Oil
1 pt cod liver oil
1 oz wheel bearing grease
1 oz white lithium grease
1 oz Hoppe's #9 solvent
2 oz Rem Oil
3 squirts of WD-40
2 gr of powder residue from a .40 Glock Kaboom

Stir with a .45 cal bore snake until blended.
Apply to all sliding and rotating parts with a Q-tip.

Do you have to add vinegar?

I thought this was just a myth. I didn't know any really existed.

"The only food oil suitable for firearms use is olive oil, and even then it only works on Berettas and Benellis." It will sometimes work on a nice Milsurp Carcano that was thrown away in the North African desert.

When my siblings and I were growing up in WV, Mom used to round us up once a week and make us swallow a big spoonful of cod liver oil. Think if I were to smell the stuff today it would make me gag.

I am working on a bio diesel formula that will also be a great gun lube.

Stay tuned.....

Gunzilla claims that their product improves lubrication, it is vegetable oil based I believe. It might make a decent salad dressing too. Clean the fouling out of your system.

Organic oils have a nasty habit of becoming acidic as they age.

You might want to sell that oil and stick with the commercially availible gun oils.

Cod liver oil is not suitable for lubrication.
There's a HUGE difference between sperm whale oil and cod liver oil.

About as much difference as between 10W40 and olive oil.

Plus cod liver oil will rot, "turn rancid".
As a retired Master watchmaker/gunsmith, I can tell you that you won't like the smell.
Older watch and clock makers refused to use the "new" synthetic lubes and since sperm whale oil was no longer available, they used various substitute fish oils.
The smell is NOT pleasant.

Okay people, I have to fess up. It was all a bit of satire aimed at those threads about using some sort of non-gun lubricant to save $2 on a $1,000 gun (yes, I know some of the lubricants are pretty decent). Some of you caught on but not all of you did. I guess I need to end this before anybody thinks I'm serious and really starts using this stuff.

I always said that if Rob Leatham or another top shooter said he was applying a dab of goose grease to his front sight, there wouldn't be a goose left alive in North America within a week.

WHAT you lube your gun with is not important, they all work about the same.
It's that you DO lube your gun.
