I have a Marlin 30-30, that has pat. dates
10-11-1887 -4-2-1889.-9-1-1899. On the side of the barrel it says Special Smokeless Steel, and Marlin Safety. Can anyone help me with this?

Are you sure it is 30-30 caliber?

Harley, I worked the action, and under the lever was A-62. I haven't taken this rifle apart yet to see if there are any other #'s does this help? It has 30-30 stamped on the barrel just before the chamber.

JONES:
My Records indicate that the the original 1888-1899 pat. was not mfg'd in the 30-30, and Rifles from 1946-1968 were pefixed with a letter, then the year. ie:1946-C, 1962V and 1965-AA.

Under Early Production Marlin Rifles the Model 1888 chambered for the 32-20, 38-40 and the 44-40 ctgs. The standard barrel was octagonal, but round barrels were available as spcial order items. This is a top ejecting action. There were approximately 4,800 mfg'd in 1888-1889.

As yours is stamped 62A I am not sure what year yours was mfg'd.

possibly some one with the Marlin Book could find the information we are seeking.

I've been looking in my Marlin book but I would need more information. Marlin often put the model markings on either the upper or lower tang. Near the Smokeless engraving there should be a proof mark; is it an M, an M within a cirle, a JM or JM within a circle. I believe (with the info given) that this could possibly be a Model 1893 or Model 93 made, at the earliest around the turn of the century. There are some serial number lists in the book but Marlin's records are not fully complete.

JONES:
My records indicate that the 1893 was the first rifle Marlin designed for the then new smokeless powder ctg. It is chambered for the 25-36, 30-30, 32 Special 32-40 and the 38-55. It was offered standard with either a round or octagonal barrel, in lengths of 24" to 32".

The barrel on earlier guns is marked Marlin Firearms Co. New Haven CT U.S.A./ Patented Oct 11 1887, April 2 1889 1,1893. In 1919 the markings were change to the Marlin Firearms Corporation/New Have Conn, U.S.A. Patented. The Rifles mfg'd after 1904 are marked "Special Smokeless Steel" on th left side of the barrel. The upper tang is marked Model 1893 on early guns and Model 93 on the later guns There were approx 900,000 mfg'd between 1893-1935.
