YOUR choice for a hand gun in the trenches!

OK........... I have a feeling that the battle tested 1911 is gonna be a hands down winner but I am curious if anyone DARES to suggests that there is a better handgun for a war in the trenches.
Remember its up to you ,You are the one who will be defending his or her life with it.
Anyone prefer a revolver?....8 shot .357?.....44 mag?........Or a modern High capacity plastic weapon........would you insist on a certain caliber?......You figure it out?

Glock (G-22 for me).

Can't beat the dependability, capacity and simplicity.

If it were my choice then my Glock 19. Since the military frowns on taking your own when deployed then I will have to stick with the Berretta 92. Not a bad gun by no means.

For this one, take a look at what did, or did not, work back then.

Handguns in general didn't fair too well in the mud of the trenches.
Revolvers of all types were notorious for jamming up from impacted mud. Cylinders stuck, cylinder notches mudded up and the cylinder wouldn't lock. Extractor rods got bent. The heavy S&W revolvers with the shouded ejector rods, got packed with mud, and because of the front lock, if the rod got bent the revolver wouldn't lock, even if it could be forced into the shroud.

Of the revolvers, the British Webley did as well as any revolver could, because the break-open action could be quickly wipped off, and it had no exposed ejector rod.

Auto pistols did better, except many of them were the early designs that were overly complicated, with many critical componets exposed to the elements.

The Luger and Mauser Broomhandles failed to handle mud and reportedly were rarely taken out into No Man's Land for night patrols.

The Colt 1911 and the Austrian Steyr 1912 both were much better designed and both did well.

Today, I'd favor the 1911, both because of it's proven ability to continue to function, and it's ability to be 100% stripped for cleaning.

Any auto with a simular closed slide like the Glock, S&W, etc would probably do well. Because of the open top slide of the Berreta and it's exposed trigger bar, I'm not too sure how well it would do.

OK, I'll vote. The 1911 would be my pick. 90 years can't all be wrong.

In trench warfare, I'd want a whole bunch of grenades, a full-auto M4gery, and Remington 870. And a company of 18-year-old Marines full of piss and vinegar (and a whole lot more foolhardy than yours truly).

A handgun would be way, way down the list.

No surprise huh?

1911

I know you said handgun--but my 1st choice is a 870 pump for a trench weapon.

Glock.

Capacity and ruggedness tilt for it even if you assume reliability is equal.

In the trenches I would rather have a Ithaca 37 M&P without the recently installed disconnector so it could be pumpfired

Pistol 1911,sig,hk,bhp,grock

Hk USP or a Glock Fullsize ie. 22, 21, 17 depending on the caliber

IMHO .40 is an ideal caliber, it is all about the personal preference

Handgun wise I'll take the Glock 22, though in general I'd agree with 1911's philosophy

Though for that matter why do I even need to be in the trench when I could be sitting in my computer room guiding the smart bombs in. If they can fly down a chimmny then surely they can hit a trench

1911 gets my vote, unless of course an MP5PWD in 10mm is considered a handgun

I hate to whine but why is it that even in a thread like this when it is pretty obvious that I am asking about WHAT HANDGUN YOU WOULD CHOOSE people must note that they would rather have a shotgun or a nuclear weapon?
It's not a big deal but I feel like it is a little degrading to the other people that post.
Yes, a shotgun would be great but we're not talking about shotguns.
Anyway I hate to whine................. but I just did

I'll hop in.

Since its a war zone, have to stick with 9mm or 45ACP.

GLOCK 21 with 4-6 magazines.

If I have to go to a handgun in a trench, the **** has really hit the fan.

A sturdy field knife is a must.

Glock with hi-cap magazines. Choose your caliber. 9mm, .357, .40, .45 would all work.

Colt M1911.

My grandfather, an infantry sergeant, used one in the trenches during WWI. Worked for him.

My grandfather was a radio op in WWII. His equipment worked too, but he'd be the first to agree that there have been some advances in the last 60 years.
