Somewhat morbid but I need help on identifying Russian Rifles
I was informed today that someone at my pistol range died and his sister is selling off his entire gun collection. I went there today and only could identify 4 or 5 of the 11 rifles. I am 90% sure that most are Russian semi-auto and bolt guns. I most likely will pick up all of these guns and resell the majority of it. The lady just wants to get rid of all of it so she can move on with her life. Apparently her brother was only 35 when he died and didn't have anyone to leave this stuff to.
Can someone post pictures and or names of the most common Russian military rifles besides AKs and SKS rifles? So far I have identified 2 Mak90s 1 Bulgarian something or other.... not a SLR95 AFAIK, but it says Bulgarian on the side of the reciever. All of the AKs are thumbhole stocks. 1 M44 1 8mm Mauser 1 FR-8 1 Some kind of FN semi auto with a B-Square mount and scope on it? 2 Norinco SKS rifles Several other Russian semi-autos that I am not familiar with. They aren't Draganov's though. Lots of mags and SKS and AK parts. Thanks in advance. Last edited by Jamie Young; August 18, 2004 at 10:38 PM. |

Try http://surplusrifle.com It is a site for military surplus rifles, and many of the ones mentioned will be there.
Here are a couple of mine: The far left is a Yugo SKS, middle is a Russian 91/30 and right is a Yugo M48 8mm Mauser |

CaspA- I think that is one of them. I don't know the caliber. I'll look more closely but I didn't see a caliber stamped on the barrel. I was only there for about half an hour and mostly looked at the 'quality' of the rifles.
Dead- You are correct. I am pretty sure there is an SVT-40. I have boxes of stuff I have to go threw and I'll double and triple check any model or calibers in the next couple days. I really want to figure out the value of all of these rifles before I pay up. I'm not sure about the double or single stack. There weren't any mags in the rifles when i picked them up. The gun looked pretty old and I didn't notice any single stack mags in the box of mags. 2 Mak90s 1 Bulgarian possible SLR101 but not sure. 1 M44 1 8mm Mauser 1 FR-8 1 FN49? 2 Norinco SKS rifles 1 Tokarov One more to go.........The other was short bolt action with a bolt that was bent forward? I never saw anything like it before (I'm not that familiar with military bolt actions). I'm assuming its some kind of Russian rifle. *edited* I think its a French MAS model 36. Can anyone give me an approx total value on all of these? What would you pay for all of these? |

If that rifle is in fact a good-condition FN-49, then it's worth about $550-$575. If it is in fact a good-condition FN-49, and I can come up with the money, I might take it. Do please see if you can find out the caliber.

Give me about a week to confirm everything but if any of you (especially Pennsylvania members) want anything let me know. I gotta go threw boxes of tools and books too.
I'll probable keep the Mauser and FR-8 and possible an AK or two. 99% sure everything else will go. I'm doing searches on the net for some of these and these are the estimates at what these guns are worth. Anyone want to contest these? 2 Mak90s $450x2 1 Bulgarian possible SLR101 but not sure. $??? not sure yet. 1 M44 $100 1 8mm Mauser $125 1 FR-8 $225 1 FN49? $575 2 Norinco SKS rifles $225x2 1 Tokarov $300-$400 French MAS model 36. $225 |

These are of course approximate prices.
Good = 60%-80% condition Excellent = 80%-100% condition NiB = new in box FN-49 Good - $250 Excellent - $575 NiB - $700 SVT 38/40 Good - $200 Excellent - $350 NiB - $750 MAK 90 Good - $275 Excellent - $400 NiB - $475 M44 I'm assuming you're referring to the Mosin Nagant carbine, they don't have the price for that in here, but these are for the M91/30: Good - $55 Excellent - $100 NiB - $400 MAS 36 Good - $60 Excellent - $110 NiB - $150 These prices are from the Stoeger Gun Trader's Guide 26th Edition, which is 2003 I believe. Hey man, I just posted what was in the book. *shrugs*
And besides, like I said, remember that the prices I posted are actually for the M91/30. Not that I would ever pay that much for either of those though. Maybe for an original M91 NIB, but that's a completely different story. |

Thanks for all of your help guys but I ain't done yet.
The FN49 came with an owners manual but I still don't see any listings on caliber or markings on the barrel. Would i be correct in guessing its a standard caliber? I gotta get a digital camera soon because there are a bunch of barrels that I still can't identify. |

You have a box of .30 caliber 155gr Palma bullets there.
Take one, and see if it fits inside the muzzle. (Assuming you don't have a vernier calipers to measure the inside bore diameter) The FN-49 came in 7mm Mauser, 7.65 Belgian Mauser, .30-06 Springfield, and 8mm Mauser. If your 155gr .30 caliber Palma bullet slides easily into the barrel and down the bore, you've got an 8mm Mauser (.32 caliber) FN-49, as sold to Egypt. If it *almost* fits, where most of the bullet fits the bore, but a portion sticks out, then it's probably a .30-06 Springfield (Luxembourg contract), 7.65 Belgian Mauser, or an Argentinian FN-49 that's been rechambered to 7.62mm NATO/.308 Winchester. If the latter, maybe some of your .308 brass will fit the chamber. If your 155gr Palma bullet doesn't even come close to fitting in the bore of the rifle from the muzzle end, you've probably got a 7mm Mauser, as chambered for the Venezuelan contract version of the FN-49.

What kind of shape are the FR-8 and SVT-38/40 in? I`ve had a hankering for both for some time now. Marcus

I think they are both in 90% condition.
I'm going to try to get to W&W next Sunday and I could bring them there and let you check them out? Otherwise you'll have to drive 45minutes south to get to where I live. |

SA-93 are great AK style firearms. You should get at least $450.00 in VG-excellent condition and $555.00 if NIB. I'm assuming this one hasn't been converted over to pistol grip configuration and still has the wooden thumbhole stock.
The SA-93 were the first Bulgarian AK's to be imported. The SA-93 has a Bulgarian milled AK receiver and chrome lined barrel. These have AK-47 style 45 degree gas block, vented gas tube and front sight. It doesn't have a cleaning rod or cleaning rod holders under barrel. These are very high quality post-ban AK's The SLR-95 is the second Bulgarian model imported into the US. Like SA-93 it's a 100% Bulgarian made AK. It has milled receiver with 90 degree gas block and AKM style gas tube and front sight. It comes with polymer handguards and thumbhole stock. |

So .. Oct 30 . any firm news yet?. I'd like to make that definite on calendar if poss .... plus Eric Robaugh and Mike from Rohrbaugh will hopefully come once I can tell em the date is fixed. |

I'm pretty much set on 5.56mm, 7.62NATO, 30/06 and 7.62x39 for rifles and the Enfield and possible the 8mm Mauser as collector/shooters. Nothing else really appeals to my style. Maybe a 50BMG someday.
Still waiting for a response to my email. I'll post ASAP. Might be able to get some Beretta or Sig reps out someday. You better let me try a Rohrbaugh this time. |
