The storm.

First off, given the photos from actual owners...
PAOLO, awesome shots. They almost warrant proof of age.
This is a GOOD looking firearm.

I was not aware of it until recent, and since I found the information on it, it is my next goal of handling, drooling over, and buying.

I was planning on my next purchase being a S&W .500 revolver, or Magnum's SP-21. Looking at the CX4 sort of derailed me.

How does it shoot?

It is obviously, from these forums and other articles, deadly accurate at 25 and 50 yards. How does it fare at longer ranges, given the pistol type rounds?

Does the low weight of the carbine feel unnatural?

I suppose I'm just fishing for all the information I can get, at this point. All and any will indeed be appreciated. I hate to plan on a purchase so quickly after disocvering it's existance, but this, so far, seems to be a hands down winner.

There is one stocked at a relatively close shop, and I'll be heading that way soon to handle one.

I'm just recently getting back into shooting, and I do think this forum will be invaluable in many decisions. Thank you all in advance.

BK

You can shoot 124gr+P ammo that is close to 1400fps in these guns. That's up in the 357 Magnum area. I've read that the MP5 is accurate enough out to 300yds. Not ideal but you can hit a man sized target at that range with the MP5. It's kind of like the 600yd shots with the M4. It's weak but still accurate enough.

Seems that with proper optics, (I'm not blessed with perfect natural eyesight), one could play around with a tight group at 100 yards easily with the CX4. If I can shoot through a previous hole, I'll be more than impressed at that distance.

Not a sniping piece, but well enough to make some tight groups at normal range distances.

Fair enough. Accurate, sleek, and inexpensive rounds. It's a cool gun. It looks awesome, and I still want it.

I've since found out the CX4 uses a crossbolt safety...familiar to me for a couple of reasons...
The .40 version intrigues me.

I just got done "decorating" mine, and putting it through it's paces with 500 or so rounds of various manufacture.

Here 'tis:

So far, it's proving to be VERY accurate, handy and completely reliable. No hiccups, even with cheapo ammo and hollow points. Using Italian pre-bans and the factory 10 rounders, I haven't had any problems whatsoever. The tool-less breakdown, handy sights and terrific ergos make it the funnest gun I have to shoot, and having the rail that allows a std. 30mm tube to cowitness the irons is very nice too. I have the multi-reticle Bushnell Trophy tube on mine, a great little sight.

And, if you're a goof like me, you'll appreciate the fact that the Storm can be bumped fired very easily and it's quite fun to put 15 rounds downrange in one pull.

The Pierce extensions add 1-2 extra rounds depending on the magazine. I have some 15 rounders made by Beretta where 2 rounds are added and a couple where it only adds 1 and I don't know why it is one way and not the other.

Yes, you can shoot +P ammo, but Beretta suggests not doing it much. It is a fun gun to shoot, but it has a lot of plastic and I don't know that I would want it as a primary defense gun or a car gun. There are simply better options.

With that said, we had a get together shoot last weekend and my Storm was a big hit. I have an ACOG TA11 with donut reticle on mine (borrowed from my AR) and sighted to 100 yards. Folks had no problem hitting a 1/2-sized silhouette steel target at 80-100 yards, firing from the shoulder and not braced. It is a very fun gun to shoot. With that in mind, it is pretty expensive for a 9mm carbine for what it does. I still like mine just fine, but don't see me running out to buy any more of them.

I can't wait to get out to the range each weekend to shoot mine. I've had the 40 S&W version for just about a month now. Really easy to hit plates on a normal range and always a head turner.

Anytime anyone is in the central PA area and wants to shoot, send me a PM.

Here is my $3 solution to whisker pulling. It is an Allen brand elastic spare shotgun cartridge sleeve. The changes are that I restitched a couple of the cartridge holders to hold magazines instead of cartridges. Plus, the sleeve covers the part of the stock that pulls the whiskers.

The mag in the gun is a 15 rounder with Pierce extension. The two spares are 20 rounders with the spacer from www.houtsenterprises.com/beretta-cx4-storm.html

My Storm now has just over 7400 rounds through it and it has done very well thusfar. I have had a total of 8 malfunctions, all stovepipes and all with Blazer 115 gr ball., but Blazer also accounts for more than 7000 rounds that I have fired through the Storm.

What determined your decision to go with the .40 vs the 9MM... And what's the largest mag size you have found in each caliber??

Santa forgot me this year, I may have to purchase one of these...

I went with the .40S&W just because a majority of my pistols are the same caliber. I modified one of the stock mags to hold 12 rounds (just use the right bench vice to push the indents back out, gently with enough padding to not mark up the surface).

Then one day at the range, I noticed the 12-round mags from my Springfield XD-40 looked almost identical to the CX-4's. I only needed to cut 2 slots in them to make them work in the CX-4, so I modified all 6 I have to work in both guns and modified the CX-4 mags to work in the XD (which just required drilling a hole and a few seconds with the dremel and modify the slot in the top, that activates the bolt release lever). Just need to be extremely careful about getting the measurements right. In order to make it repeatable for all 6 clips I put my time into making a jig out of 6061 aluminum.

If I can figure out how to take the butt apart and get inside there, I think I found a way to integrate a switch for a laser sight with the trigger. Anyone know the procedure to take it apart (if it was even designed to do so)? I poked at it a bit and it doesn't look all that easy to get it apart, but there seems to be plenty of room in there. When i get a bit more daring I'll try to take the rubber padding off the top of the butt and see if thats the solution to it. The end result is to have the laser come on when you just take the slack out of the trigger.

I just crossed the 3000 round mark this weekend without a single hiccup. I shoot factory loads mostly, Fiocchi 170gr FMJTC. accounts for 2700 of those. The rest is a mix of american eagle 165gr. and Federal hydra-shok 155gr.

Compare to other carbs.

OK now I want to see someone who has had the Ruger carbine or the Marlin camp carbine and compare the three. I can't decide if I trust space age polymers or steel and hardwood more. Getting bored with my M1 carbine and would like to check out something less than a centerfire rifle carbine-not quite .223 level for instance. What say?

Trigger Jobs

I've had my Beretta CX4 Storm for a bit now and put a fair amount of lead down range with it. I mounted a Bushnell hold sight on it and I am pretty happy over all with it minus the trigger pull. The trigger pull is way to heavy.

I've asked a few local gunsmiths here in El Paso to lighten the trigger but they don't seem to know how.

Does any one out there know how to lighten the triger?

Welcome aboard, Sapper.

Appreciate your eagerness to post, but I'd stick the replies to threads less than 3 years old, personally.

I was looking pretty hard at these a few months ago as a candidate for my next rifle. I've already got a Beretta 92 and being able to swap magazines is a great draw. I was thinking that this would make a great home defense weapon, especially for my wife.

Recently, though, I read where someone said that the springs wouldn't hold up well in the constant compression I would have it in so that my wife wouldn't have to cock it. Any opinions about this ?

I don't think this is an issue with modern spring material...just empty the mag periodically to make sure

Not the magazine spring -- the recoil spring.

You want to store the rifle with the bolt open so your wife won't have to cock it. If I may ask, is she physically disabled in some way or is this just a learning issue? You don't have to be terrible strong to cock the Storm.

Yes this is an old thread, but since I posted near the top, here is an update...

I now have something like 30K through my Storm 9mm. I have worn out one extractor and replaced one recoil spring. It shoots best with Beretta magazines. I have afer market 30 round magazines for plinking at the range and they do okay until you drop one and ammo shoots out or gets canted all womperjawed. I shoot Blazer ammo and it loves the stuff.

I have shot the Hi Point. If I had it to do over again, I might go with a Hi Point instead. The only shortcoming of the Hi Point is mag capacity. They seem to be very reliable little carbines and shooting one side by side with the Storm, just as accurate out to 200 yards.
