Beautiful gun....beautiful holster. I always wanted one...but...I must ask you. What do you do with it? I mean...is it a carry snubby? Does one backpack with it...just in case a bear attacks you? Seriously...I thought of a .44 mag and maybe chamber it for .44 special...but damn, that looks heavy.

Thanks.I am just a Big bore fan. I am sure it is not for everyone. It will be used for camping in the truck and a deterent when you look at that big hole when some fool breaks in your home. When you run out of bullets you can use it as a club. I reload some pretty heavty loads and with the big frame of the Alaskan I load just about anything I want with it. It is heavy not as heavy as my Freedom Arms 454 casull. It is a very nice handling gun. very easy to control recoil with the size of the gun.

Not sure i'd use that for home defense. Bullet may end up in the next town. Not to mention your ear drums will be dangling like nice earings.

WOuld be great for outdoors though.

Its prefect for home defense. There are some real nice 44 special loads that are perfect for home defense. Thats whats nice about reloading you can always find the perfect load for you want to do. For stopping a attacker or for just target practicing. For practice or target shooting I use 240Gr.SWC 8Gr. of Unique powder. No recoil and very accurate.

Those are cool. I just can't rationalize buying a short barrel .44 Magnum (I've got enough snubbies as it is). Give me time though and I'll probably think of an excuse (Hmmm, I don't have a .454 Casull yet)

I just bought a 454 Casull ( since I already had this old Dan Wesson 44 Mag snubbie )

My 454 Alaskan ( bought cause I also love the big bores & needed a stainless gun... & already had the Dan Wesson...

I like it I have a it's little brother a 2.75" stainless Security Six with Pachmayr presentation grips, it weighs in at 37.8oz empty I wouldn't mind the 4 extra onces to potentially double the energy.

I'd love to have one of those "Big Bore" sunbs in 480 Ruger. I'd like to load it up with some of the lighter weight lead bullets in the 800fps range, that'd make a heck of a stopper, LOL.

It's on my list for a future purchase. I already have a variety of .44 magnums including a 3" 629 but there is something about the Ruger that cries out "Gotta have one".

Mine is very accurate. The lock up on it is unbelievable it sounds like clock work when the trigger is cocked and the cylinder rotates. It is a little hard to get used to shooting 454 casull out of it. I think in most part it is just because of the single action grip frame. One of the best revolvers and maybe the best revolver out there.

Wow, I love those.

Can anyone give me a recoil comparison to say a steel framed snub nosed .357?

Sorry no intent to hijack...

Me too. I don't own a revolver with a barrel longer than 5" at the moment. I love loud heavy recoiling little snubbies. I was looking at the Alaskan and thought about getting one but I always come back to a 3" S&W 629 or something because I just love the triggers on the Smiths. Tell me... how is the trigger on the alaskan compared to a Smith 44mag? I'm trying to clean out all my non-smith revolvers from my collection but I may have to get one of these.

wolf springs make a spring kit for the ruger super readhawk alaskan, which makes the trigger pretty nice.. not smith like, but very stackable
recoil on the alaskan in 45 colt is lighter than a 357 snubbie, more like a 38 special

Another vote for the 454 Casull and Simply Rugged holster!

Yep, I have it because I can. 45 Colt is nice, the Casull loads can be a bear, though, but that's it's intended use, no?

I have the Alaskan in 44Mag with the Simply Rugged Holster for backpacking and as a hunting sidearm. Recoil is stiff but not unpleasant. Trigger isn't bad. I've had worse. I bought mine from a fellow online/FFL at a truly great price. Can't believe what they want for them at the shops in my area, $700.
