308 semi auto rifle poll
Ok, if you have to buy only one, which one would it be.
Choose the best of each for your pick. So with the FAL say a DSA. Same goes with M14's, HK-91's, AR-10's, whatever is in your mind the best of each is what I am looking to compare to, so pick that in your mind. Cost is no option, just the gun itelf FN-FAL/DSASA58 etc HK-91/SAR3/8 etc. M14/M1A etc. AR-10/SR-25 etc. VEPR/Russian 308's. |

For long range shooting using a 308 rifle I prefer the new FN-AR. I have previously owned both the DSA-SA58 and an AR-10. The SA58 was not accurate and the AR-10 uses the gas impingement system that I don't like. So far the FNAR is the best shooting of all of the newer model "black" rifles on the market(IMO), even Winchester is coming out with one that's an exact copy of it; it's called the SX-AR.

POF's 308 AR based rifles are piston not DI and shoot sub moa. The new LWRC REPR is as well. as is the Knight Arms SR-25. So there are many options. The FNAR looks like it is extremely accurate, however. I have seen M1A's with NM parts and good stocks shoot sub moa. But accuracy is not the only thing here. I have not voted yet, but I noticed that one of the least accurate rifles is getting the most votes...lol. The FAL, why? simple, it is rugged and well designed, reliable and very ergonomic. It's not always about accuracy.

All depends on what we're using them for. Over all I like the M1A and HK 91.

my bad. I thought I had heard that KA was making piston uppers for their guns now. I guess it is just a rumor. But I could swear I read that somewhere. I guess that leaves LWRC and POF.

The only thing that FN messed up on is developing a proprietary magazine instead of using an existing mag such as the AR-10 type magazine.

yup, but if you look at it as a cost basis, you can get an FN fairly cheap, about 1300-1400, plus 6 mags put you at 1800 or so. not to bad. The bigger issue is spare parts and future spare mags. In this climate of possibly banning of assault weapons, this could be a factor.
I am not surprised at the early outcome of this poll. SA M1A owners outnumber all others when it comes to 308's. AR's are close and HK's due to the PTR's are not far behind. What does surprise me is the FAL. You hardly ever see them at the range, yet they are in 2nd place. Where are all those closet FAL owners Great rifle obviously. |

If you can buy only one make sure it's an M14/M1A.

I voted for the Vepr since it is the .308 semi auto that excited me into a purchase. The Vepr is , at least to my eyes, a beautiful "battle rifle" (of course it is really a Kalashnikov based sporting rifle). From a practical standpoint the AR10 based rifles are probably superior in accuracy and the Hk 91 mags are now dirt cheap so one of those makes good sense......but I still love the Vepr.

I voted for the Dragunov. Simply put, it is, to me, the most visually appealing and is more accurate than I am.
Naturally, I'd prefer it in x54R (if I could pick up a couple of crates of 7N1 or 7N14, I'd be all set), but I'd be ok w/ a x51 version too (or BOTH!)

Didn't we just do this?
I like nearly all of these rifles. Just that these days I really like the PTR91. so many cool accessories available for them, and they shoot as good as the others. Very reliable rifle too.

FYI, Dragunov SVD is 7.62x54R & not .308 aka 7.62x51mm NATO.

There are some SVD Drag's that are in .308Winchester here in the USA.
But yes, most are chambered in 7.62x54R |

Why only own one. I'd be hard pressed to give up either my HK91, or CZ SA VZ58. Both are great rifles.
