Can we save TFL together?
Dear shooting friends,
I fully understand and respect Rich's decision, even though it's heartbreaking to see such a great forum close down. The question is - can we keep our TFL community going? My idea is this. How about if we, as a community, represented (perhaps) by our administrators and moderators, were to look for a Web host that would house a "new" TFL (perhaps under a different name), but carrying over our existing membership list, screen names, post counts, etc.? I assume this would cost money. I'm personally willing to pony up an annual fee to run the new online community. I'm guessing many of us would be able to find $20-$30 per year to support a new forum. This should give more than enough money to operate it, even with only a tenth of our present 18,000 members (after all, assuming a $25 membership fee, this will produce revenue of some $45,000 per year!). We could let new members in for a free period, after which, if they wanted to stay, we'd have to ask them to pony up as well. This may be a forlorn hope, but I hate to see such a vibrant and interesting community close down. Any comments or suggestions? Let's hear 'em! God bless. |

This has been discussed extensively already. TFL won't stay on as an active forum but there's an allied forum in the spirit of TFL that's about to happen. Check your email please.

I think we should let TFL die in peace. Rich is responsible for everything that we have learned here. We should take that and spread it to others.

the 'free' ezboards are peppered with ads, and the pricing to pay for no ads is dependant on how many 'views' your board gets.
my guess is that ezboards would be cost prohibitive. that said, i am willing to pay for something similar to what we have here at TFL.

With all due respect, Atc1man, I don't care to have anything less than what I am accustommed to.
TFL or nothing. Oleg's last gives me hope & waiting for that e-mail to come up .... I'm away for now. $20-30? Kidding, right? I've ponied up a few scoots here 'n there for The Cause & will do $100+ (actually, just seem to have that on-hand about now) in a heartbeat for TFL to remain up & running as is. C'mon. If we can't do this ourselves in Rich's most exemplary style, we ain't jack. Any reason this can't be leveraged off-a & maintained? |

I'm with PreacherMan. Oleg, count me in on the allied forum. If it costs, I'm still there.

Please send good site suggestions to: http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/...hreadid=146270
At least one new site will flourish from the TFL Members. I hope there'll be many more. New sites would have to be under a different name, because "The Firing Line" is Rich's site. Let's open NEW venues, not a "TFL2".

Had an experience last year with a good forum (Taunton Press woodworking/homebuilding) that simply changed servers/OS software to a new format. It was a similar mix of old/young, friendly/not, and pro/newbies that always seemed to have just the right flavor under the original system. After it changed, a few old hands stayed on, a lot of new ones boarded, but the old flavor was gone. It would be nice to preserve the thoughtful, respectful and informed aspects of TFL in any new forum. Count me in.

To all of you - Oleg is getting something going, although I don't have any details yet. I suggest that if you want to keep the TFL family together, post your interest on this thread, and I'll e-mail Oleg to ask him to respond to us all when things get firmed up a little. Thank you all VERY much for the support!
God bless. |

They have a flashing banner that says "Welcome T F L Members" I predict their membership grows , they have added 13 members since I joined.

I'm very interested in the new "allied forum" that Oleg is allegedly getting going.

Please don't forget http://www.thearmedcitizen.net
It's a cozy little site, with ground rules very similar to TFL. Welcome all.

Oleg,
Another volunteer for a subscription site. I'm willing to pony up for the cause and assist in any other way that I can.
